“Youth of today, leaders of tomorrow!” was the unofficial theme proclaimed by the participants of Rotary Clubs of Hawaii Island’s 2015 Rotary Youth Leadership Academy held recently at Kilauea Military Camp in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

More than 40 Hawaii Island high school students attended the weekend camp to improve their communication, organization and collaboration skills. Lessons included active listening, recognizing different perspective, building a vision and integrity. Students also participated in a half-day ginger eradication project and learned about indigenous plants in the park.

The camp is hosted every year with members of Hawaii Island Rotary clubs as the facilitators and presenters. Participants are invited to return as youth facilitators, further strengthening their leadership skills.

Rotary Youth Leadership Academy is hosted each spring and students must pre-register to be considered. Contact Gail Takaki at gtakaki808@gmail.com for more information.
